DAILY UPDATE by Fr. Vinny and Seminarian Bobby Vogel
Good News! As some of you may have heard, we have two seminarians of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis who are joining us throughout this summer. They are Bobby Vogel from North Vernon, IN and Jack Wright from Richmond, IN. Both will be studying Spanish and getting some immersion opportunities here. Bobby arrived early this week and Jack will arrive early next week. I’m sure that you will all discover as I have that both are fine young men and we are blessed to have them with us. Here is a little introduction from Bobby:
“Hello! My name is Bobby Vogel, and I finished my first two years at St. Meinrad and will be here for the summer.
I am from the small town of North Vernon, which is about an hour south of here. I grew up in the country close to our small parish, St. Joseph. After graduating from Jennings Co. High School, I went to IUPUI and studied Information Technology.
After high school, I struggled with my faith for a few years until I got involved in the Catholic community at IUPUI and met the FOCUS (the Fellowship of Catholic University Students) missionaries. In my last two years of college, I went from a non-practicing Catholic to attending Bible study every week, striving to pray every day, going to daily Mass whenever I could, and so forth. The FOCUS missionaries showed me how to live my faith practically and what a relationship with Jesus Christ looked like. Because of the impact the missionaries had, I began to think about the question of the priesthood, which had been weighing on my heart for several years. That openness led to my decision to become a FOCUS missionary so that I could guide other people who were like me to Christ.
I spent two years as a full-time missionary at Eastern Michigan University. I went out and met the students on campus and invited them into a relationship with Jesus Christ. I led Bible studies and mission trips to Malaysia, Ecuador and Mexico. I invited students to Mass and adoration in order for them to encounter our Lord. I mentored and walked with men as they grew into leaders in evangelization on their college campus.
This kind of ministry is what led me to enter seminary in order to see if God is calling me to be a priest. I have four more years left of formation at St. Meinrad to discern this call. I am pleased to be able to spend my summer with you all and will be focusing on learning Spanish and being involved with your community here.
Thank you for welcoming me and God bless!”
