The Our Lady of Greenwood/Saint Rose of Lima CYO cross-country team will begin our annual series of Fun Runs during the week of July 6.
HERE’S THE FIRST WEEK’S SCHEDULE FOR FUN RUNS:
Monday, July 6 6:30pm at Freedom Park in Greenwood
Wednesday July 8 4pm at Craig Park in Greenwood
Thursday, July 9 6:30pm at Freedom Park in Greenwood
Fun Runs are conditioning runs designed to help students discover whether or not they might enjoy running cross-country, and to start the training process in a very informal way. Students need not sign up on the CYO website to attend the first week of Fun Runs, HOWEVER, ALL REGISTRATIONS ARE DUE BY JULY 13. If you know that your student wants to be on the team, please register ASAP!
For our newcomers who are not familiar with how CYO cross-country works, students in grades 3-8 are eligible to compete. In cross-country meets, the races are divided into 1) 3th-4th graders, 2) 5th-6th graders, and 3) 7th-8th graders (otherwise known as “Cadets”). In most meets, girls and boys race together but are scored separately. We usually compete in 5-6 meets during the season, beginning around Labor Day and ending with the CYO Championships in mid-October.
Lots of good things are happening with cross-country already! For one thing, we are delighted to add two more coaches to the team: Father Vinny, and Jennifer Blotkamp! Many thanks to both of them! We have already heard from several families who want to participate in cross-country, and from several adults who are willing to come out and run or walk with us. Anyone out on the course during practices – of any pace including those walking behind the team – adds an extra layer of safety for our young runners. And Father Vinny has set up a Flocknote group for the team so we can easily add folks to the list and communicate with cross-country families.
Also, physicals from last year will be good for another year. However, we will be dispersing REQUIRED waivers for families to submit that their athlete’s health hasn’t changed since their last physical.
From now on, we’ll be communicating through the Flocknote group instead of sending emails to the entire school. Please contact us if anyone in your family (students 3rd grade or older, all the way up through adults) is interested in ANY level of involvement with the cross-country team, so we can add you to the list! Feel free to call the school office with questions 317-881-1300.
