What Do I Do at Our Lady of the Greenwood?
In my Stewardship role, I promote giving of Time, Talent, and Treasure to God through the many ministries at OLG. I meet with new parishioners to welcome them to the parish, and encourage them to be good stewards and become active in parish life. I work to educate the parish about stewardship through various programs and activities, and write a weekly column in the parish bulletin. I co-ordinate with parish staff to conduct the annual stewardship pledge campaigns of Time, Talent, and Treasure for the parish and archdiocese. I serve as point person for parish capital campaigns. In my Development role, I work to promote our school with activities that target recruitment, retention, and financial aid. I take pictures and videos of school activities and programs, and post on our Facebook pages and web sites. I run weekly bulletin promotions for our school. I conduct parent satisfaction surveys. I administer the Quality Education Scholarship program which has raised over $300,000 in parishioner donations to fund scholarships for OLG students.
I also serve as the Volunteer Coordinator which includes helping people find the perfect fit for volunteer opportunities, helping locate people to fill vacancies on committees, Chairing the Ministry Fair, provide a ministry directory, and supporting the efforts of our committees.
I married my high school sweetheart, graduated from IU and worked as a radio and TV news reporter for a few years. Next, I served as Youth Ministry Coordinator at St. Mary’s in New Albany for 8 years. During this time, I went back to school and got a Master’s degree in Religious Studies and Youth Ministry. We moved to Owensboro, KY where I served as the first Director of Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Owensboro for 5 years. In 1994, we moved to Indianapolis where I was the Associate Director of Youth Ministry for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Next, I served as a District Executive for the Boy Scouts, and later as Exploring Executive. Then, I went to work at Kiwanis International, a world-wide service organization. I served as the Growth Manager for all Youth Programs in North America. In 2010, Msgr. Mark invited me to join the OLG staff in a new position, Director of Stewardship and Development. It’s been great to serve in full-time ministry at a parish that I have loved since we moved to this area 25 years ago.
Why Do I Work at Our Lady of the Greenwood?
I was excited when Msgr. Mark offered me the opportunity to serve as the Stewardship & Development Director at OLG. We had been parishioners for 16 years when I joined the staff, but I have experienced so many more aspects of parish life as a staff member. I love to be part of the day-to-day life of the parish, and to help OLG grow.
How would I describe Our Lady of the Greenwood to someone who has never been here?
OLG is like a big family…… a family of families. There is a place for everyone, young and old, from whatever nationality or culture. We’ve been blessed with great priests and a dedicated staff. But the thing that really sets OLG apart is the many wonderful, active parishioners who make this a vibrant parish with many active ministries. I’ve met so many people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and get to work.
Two memories of church growing up
- Singing in the St. Andrew’s Boys Choir from 4th-8th grade. Our principal, Sr. Paula once told us “You boys sometimes behave like little devils…… but you sound like angels!”
- Winning the CYO Deanery Basketball Championship and going 23-2 in 6th grade. Heck, most high school teams don’t even play 25 games.
Home and Family
I grew up in Richmond, IN…. in the shadow of St. Andrew’s Church. I’m the 2nd of 4 boys (my mom’s sainthood status is assured). Our family was very active in church and school activities. I really enjoyed playing CYO basketball in grade school and high school. In high school, I loved all the great CYO activities we did, and served in several leadership roles. CYO changed my life. I met my wife, Mary, at a CYO Deanery Day activity.
Married with one daughter. We have lived in Southport and been members of OLG since 1994. My wife, Mary is a cash management specialist for Asphalt Materials, Inc. My daughter, Christie lives in Bloomington and teaches at the Montessori School. She also teaches art classes at the Waldron Art Center and has a clay studio in Bloomington.
