Greetings OLG,

 I would like to offer a brief security review for our parish, just to make sure we know what to do in certain emergency situations.

Tornado warning: Go downstairs using the east doors of the narthex and upstairs Madonna Hall. Go to:

• Lower level Madonna Hall
• Prayer Room
• Narthex
• A priest or a staff member will open the office as soon as possible for extra room.

However, if there is a prediction of heavy storms with possible tornados it would be OK to stay home especially if you are elderly or struggle with mobility.

 Fire:  If you are the first to notice, pull a fire alarm or call 911.

• Be attentive to where the fire is and exit the building as quickly as possible. Don’t panic but move quickly.
• As you face the altar you may notice there are two doors in front of you on the right and the left. These are called Egress doors and are designed for you to exit the building as quickly as possible, use them if you are close to them.
• Additionally, use the normal exit and entrance doors in the narthex on the east and west sides of the building if they are not close to the fire.
• Our ushers will assist those who are elderly or who may struggle with mobility but I invite you to also assist anyone you may see who is needing help or assistance.

 Active Shooter: In the world we live in, while unlikely, this is an unfortunate possibility. Our school has an excellent system in place for the protection of our students. For the Mass or Church gatherings here are a few instructions:

 Priests, ushers, and greeters: The power of “hello”. It can be difficult to greet people who may look a little different or agitated but it can be helpful in diffusing and assessing a situation. If you think the person is dangerous or potentially violent based on what they are saying or how they are acting, use your best judgement. Don’t be afraid to call 911.

• If a situation occurs, i.e. you see or hear gunshots, etc. Get away from the shooter as quickly as possible. This is tricky, because you have to make your own best judgement as to how to do this. Options would be:
  • Get out of the building as quickly as possible, when you are safe call 911.
  • Lay down in the pew, especially if mobility is an issue, the pews are thick enough that it may protect you from bullets, etc.
  • If you can’t get out, hide and call 911. Give as much information as possible without revealing your location. The average police response time is 3 minutes, our police department is less than two blocks from here, expect it to be faster.

 Overall, it is just important to pay attention to your surroundings and make sure you are prepared. You want to be ready to think clearly, quickly, and decisively when an emergency occurs. These are difficult times that often demand courage and strength, stay close to God in prayer and he will give you what you need to be safe and strong.

 Me gustaría ofrecer una breve revisión de seguridad para nuestra parroquia, solo para asegurar que sepamos qué hacer en ciertas situaciones de emergencia.

• Además, utilice las puertas normales de entrada y salida en el nártex de los lados este y oeste del edificio si no están cerca del incendio.
• Nuestros ujieres (ministerio de hospitalidad) ayudarán a las personas mayores o que tengan dificultades con la movilidad, pero los invito a ayudar también a cualquier persona que vea que necesite ayuda o asistencia.

 Individuo Armado y Disparando - Tirador activo: En el mundo en el que vivimos, aunque es poco probable, esta es una posibilidad desafortunada. Nuestra escuela cuenta con un excelente sistema para la protección de nuestros estudiantes.

 Para la Misa o reuniones de la Iglesia:

• Sacerdotes, ujieres (ministerio de bienvenida): El poder del “hola”. Puede resultar difícil saludar a personas que pueden parecer un poco diferentes o nerviosas, pero puede resultar útil para calmar y evaluar una situación. Si cree que la persona es peligrosa o potencialmente violenta según lo que dice o cómo actúa, utilice su mejor criterio, pero no tema llamar al 911.
• Si ocurre una situación, es decir, ves o escuchas disparos, etc. Aléjate del tirador lo más rápido posible. Esto es complicado, porque usted tiene que tomar su mejor criterio sobre cómo hacerlo. Las opciones serían:

• Salga del edificio lo más rápido posible, cuando esté seguro llame al 911.
• Resguárdese en la banca, especialmente si la movilidad es un problema, las bancas son lo suficientemente gruesos como para protegerlo de las balas, etc.
• Si no puede salir, escóndase y llame al 911. Brinde tanta información como sea posible sin revelar su ubicación. El tiempo promedio de respuesta de la policía es de 3 minutos, nuestro departamento de policía está a menos de dos cuadras de aquí, esperamos que sea más rápido.

En general, es importante prestar atención a su entorno y asegurarse de estar preparado. Quiere estar preparado para pensar con claridad, rapidez y decisión cuando se produzca una emergencia. Son tiempos difíciles que muchas veces exigen valentía y fortaleza, mantente cerca de Dios en oración y él te dará lo que necesitas para estar seguro y fuerte.
