Baptismal Preparation requirements for Our Lady of Greenwood
Welcome and thanks for remembering the importance of faith in your lives and in the lives of your children. The following are some guidelines and basic requirements as you choose your godparents and the date for your baby’s baptism.
Preparation Class
Here at OLG we require that parents of children under the age of seven who wish to baptize their child attend one session of preparation held on the 3rd Thursday of every month from 7pm-8:30pm. Please register at least three days in advance in order to attend so that we can have the materials we need ready for the class. Please be advised that if there are no prior registrations the class will be cancelled.
You do not have to attend our preparation class if:
- You have attended a baptismal preparation class at Our Lady of the Greenwood within two years of the date you are requesting, and are:
- Practicing your faith by following the five precepts of the Church, namely:
- You are attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation
- Receiving communion at least once a year
- Going to confession at least once a year
- Fasting and abstaining on the days prescribed by the Church (Ash Wednesday and Good Friday)
- Giving to the church according to your ability
While it is preferred that you attend our class, if because of legitimate work or school conflicts you are not able to attend our baptismal preparation classes these are the two online course that we approve:

Godparents
We get a lot of questions about godparents and the requirements so here they are!
It is important to remember that the role of the godparent is to assist the parents in praying for and raising their child in the Roman Catholic faith. Their role is exclusively oriented towards the Catholic faith and that is why the requirements are even a little stricter than requirements for the parents.
- At least one godparent must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church. If they are living in a free union, a civil marriage, or other marriage not (yet) approved by the Church, they cannot serve as a godparent. We are happy to help any godparent get married in the Church if they wish to do so, just make an appt. with me at the office (This email address is being protected from spambots. - They must be at least 16 years old and have received all of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist)
- They must be practicing their Catholic faith, i.e. attending weekly Sunday Mass and receiving Holy Communion as the minimum.
- There is only a need for one godparent, it is by custom that we have two. If you have at least one godparent the other one can be a Christian witness.
- If there are two, one must be male and the other female.
- If a godparent cannot be present at the baptism they can still be the godparent, we call this “proxy”. This means that a person can stand in the place of the actual godparent at the baptism ceremony.
- If godparent is from another parish it is preferred that we have a letter from the parish stating that they are practicing Catholics in good standing with the Church. However, if that is not possible, and you as parents assure me that they are Catholics in good standing and practicing their faith I will accept your testimony as true.
- If it is not possible for you to find any godparent that meets these requirements, please let me know and we have parishioner who have volunteered to serve as godparents for you.
Where and when to baptize at OLG
- Baptisms are available every Sunday at 2pm and Saturday at 12pm by request. Baptisms are occasionally are bi-lingual (English and Spanish). Baptisms can be done at Mass at the discretion of the Pastor and by request.
- Note: there are a few times when we are not available, because of other commitments.
- You must be a registered member of our parish to baptize here with this exception:
- All parishes in the South Deanery listed below. If you are from one of these parishes you can baptize at OLG without seeking further permission:

Requisitos de preparación bautismal para Nuestra Señora de Greenwood
Bienvenidos y gracias por recordar la importancia de la fe en sus vidas y en las de sus hijos. A continuación, se presentan algunas pautas y requisitos básicos para elegir a sus padrinos y la fecha del bautizo de su bebé.
Clase de preparación
En OLG, solicitamos a los padres de niños menores de siete años que deseen bautizar a su hijo(a) asistan a una sesión de preparación que se lleva a cabo el tercer jueves de cada mes de 7:00pm a 8:30pm. Por favor, inscríbanse con al menos tres días de anticipación para que podamos tener listos los materiales y el espacio necesario para la clase. Les informamos que, si no hay inscripciones previas, la clase se cancelará.
No es necesario asistir a nuestra clase de preparación si:
- Ha asistido a una clase de preparación bautismal en Nuestra Señora de Greenwood dentro de los dos años posteriores a la fecha de su solicitud y:
- Practica su fe siguiendo los cinco preceptos de la Iglesia, a saber:
- Asiste a misa los domingos y días de precepto.
- Recibe la comunión al menos una vez al año.
- Se confiesa al menos una vez al año.
- Ayuna y se abstiene en los días prescritos por la Iglesia (Miércoles de Ceniza y Viernes Santo).
- Dona a la iglesia según sus posibilidades.
No tiene que asistir a una clase de preparación adicional. Si bien es preferible que asistas a nuestra clase, si por motivos legítimos de trabajo o estudios no puedes asistir a nuestras clases de preparación bautismal, estos son los dos cursos en línea que aprobamos:

Padrinos
Recibimos muchas preguntas sobre los padrinos y los requisitos, ¡así que aquí están!
Es importante recordar que el rol del padrino es ayudar a los padres a orar por su hijo y criarlo en la fe católica romana. Su rol está orientado exclusivamente a la fe católica, por lo que los requisitos son incluso un poco más estrictos que los de los padres.
- Al menos uno de los padrinos debe ser católico practicante y estar al día con los deberes de la Iglesia. Si viven en unión libre, matrimonio civil u otro matrimonio no aprobado (aún) por la Iglesia, no pueden ser padrinos. Con gusto ayudaremos a cualquier padrino a casarse por la Iglesia si así lo desea. Solo tiene que programar una cita conmigo en la oficina (This email address is being protected from spambots. - Deben tener al menos 16 años y haber recibido todos los sacramentos de Iniciación (Bautismo, Confirmación y Eucaristía).
- Deben practicar su fe católica, es decir, asistir a la misa dominical semanal y recibir la Sagrada Comunión como mínimo.
- Solo se necesita un padrino; por costumbre, tenemos dos. Si tiene al menos un padrino, el otro puede ser un testigo cristiano.
- Si un padrino no puede estar presente en el bautizo, puede ser el padrino; a esto lo llamamos "apoderado". Esto significa que una persona puede sustituir al padrino en la ceremonia del bautizo.
- Si el padrino es de otra parroquia, es preferible que tengamos una carta de la parroquia que declare que es católico practicante y está al día con la Iglesia. Sin embargo, si eso no es posible, y ustedes, como padres, me aseguran que son católicos al día y practican su fe, aceptaré su testimonio como verdadero.
- Si no les es posible encontrar un padrino que cumpla con estos requisitos, por favor, háganmelo saber. Tenemos feligreses voluntarios para ser sus padrinos.
Dónde y cuándo bautizar en OLG
- Los bautizos están disponibles todos los domingos a las 2:00pm y los sábados a las 12:00, con previa solicitud y autorización. Ocasionalmente, los bautizos son bilingües (inglés y español). Los bautizos se pueden realizar en alguna misa a discreción del párroco y previa solicitud.
- Nota: En algunos casos, no estamos disponibles debido a otros compromisos.
- Debe ser miembro registrado de nuestra parroquia para bautizar aquí, con la siguiente excepción:
- Todas las parroquias del Decanato Sur que se enumeran a continuación. Si pertenece a una de estas parroquias, puede bautizar en OLG sin necesidad de solicitar permiso adicional.
